Winter recreation finds a new frontier
If anyone knows the joys of exploring outdoors during winter, it's surfer, skier, and former Olympic freestyle coach David Kantermo. Living in northern Sweden, where cold-weather months make up much of the year, David doesn’t stop getting after his favorite recreational activities just cause the temps drop and the seasons change.
When he and action-sports photographer Emrik Jansson set out to capture the spirit of winter adventure, they arrived at an unprecedented idea: to combine skiing and surfing in one shot.

Summer is a state of mind
That idea resulted in a photo that’s made it to the semifinal round of the 2023 Red Bull Illume, Red Bull’s adventure and action sports imagery contest. Says Emrik, “the big lake, Kallsjön, in our hometown Åre is without ice until early February despite temperatures often dropping down to minus 30 degrees celsius. [It was] the perfect way to get this shot.”

Surfing through the seasons
David and Emrik will be the first to tell you that the perks of cold-weather jetboarding are plentiful, from less boat traffic to time spent in nature when it’s needed most. And their ethos about getting out there—no matter the time of year—is an important one to remember. After all, the most rewarding outdoor experiences take place when you least expect them.
